STUDENT AFFILIATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL SYSTEM CORPORATION AND MEDICAL UNIVERSITY – PLEVEN

SCOPE: MEDICAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, UPPER CHESAPEAKE HEALTH, BEL AIR, MD, USA

TERM: 21ST DECEMBER 2022 – 21ST DECEMBER 2027

Dr. Sumit Bassi, MD, was among the first international alums who graduated with a Master in Medicine (MD) degree from Medical University – Pleven in 2004. He has always been in good relationships with the Faculty of Medicine and the academic governance of MU-Pleven. In 1997, he assisted Assoc. Prof. K. Ignatov, MD, PhD – Rector of the Higher Medical Institute in Pleven at that time, in the introduction of the English-Language-Education (ELE) Master’s program in Medicine for international students at the university. After graduation, Dr. Bassi worked in Asia and Europe for a few years. He then moved to the USA, completing his Family Medicine residency in Bangor, Maine, and his Sports Medicine fellowship at Summa Akron, Ohio. Since 2016, he has been working as a Director of Sports Medicine. Dr. Bassi has also been working in the Emergency Department and practicing Inpatient Medicine at the University of Maryland, Upper Chesapeake Health and other hospitals. He has been helping international medical students from MU-Pleven with remote lectures and consultations on selected topics in his field of expertise. Since December 2022, Dr Sumit Bassi has been the official representative of MU-Pleven for organizing and conducting the practical rotation program at Upper Chesapeake Health under the Student Affiliation Agreement between the University of Maryland Medical System Corporation and the Medical University – Pleven. Due to his persistence, the program has become possible. On 17 March 2023, Dr. Bassi was awarded the academic title “Honorary International Professor at Medical University – Pleven” for his valuable contribution to medical students’ higher education and training mobility.
