Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases was founded in 1975. From 1992 to 2017, Head of the Department is Assoc. Prof. Ivan Tsinlikov, PhD. From 2017, Temp. Head of the Department is Prof. Maria Ljubomirova Tsekova, Ph.D.
The academic staff consists of one Professor, one Associate Professor and eight Assistant Professors. All of them are specialists with long experience in the field of Internal Diseases, with one or two further specializations: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Pulmology, Nephrology. The Department has two successful dissertation papers for Doctor's degrees and one habilitation procedure is currently being carried out. The staff of the department teaches students, interns and doctors specializing in Endocrinology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine and General Medicine. There are also short courses for post-graduate specialization - from 15 days to 3 months. In 1997, under the Ministry of Health Order, one of the four University Diabetes Centers in the country was based and functions as part of the Department.
The Department of Propedeutics of Internal Diseases has a modern ultrasound center, which performs echocardiography (two-dimensional, Doppler and colored), ultrasound of the abdominal organs and the thyroid gland. Laboratory ECGs are performed to assess coronary reserve and physical capacity. 24-hour Holter electrocardiography as well as endoscopic gastrointestinal tract imaging are also performed. All this allows the trainee doctors to get acquainted with the modern methods of treatment and diagnostics and to acquire practical skills for working with the most modern medical equipment.
