The Sport sector, former Center for Physical Education and Sport, was established in 1974. Since 2006 it has been a part of the structure of the Department of Physical Education and Sports. From 1994 to 2017, Head of the Sector was Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov. From 2017, the position of Head of Sector is held by Assoc. Prof. Iskra Stefanova Ilieva, PhD.
At present, the academic staff of the sector include two Associate Professors, one Assistant Professor and three Lecturers. Since the establishment of the sector (prev. center) one Doctoral degree dissertation thesis has been defended at the Sector and two academic positions "Associate Professor" have been aquired from staff members. The sector has extensive, well-equiped indoor and open sports facilities, where practical activities with students from the 1st to the 4th year in all university specialties are carried out. Classes in "Physical education and sport" as well as overall sports training and various competition are also held in those facilities. In 2013 the old sports and gym building was fully restored, equiped and refurbished into "Prof. Dr. Nedko Kyuchukov" sports complex (in memory of the founder of the university and its first Rector). This allows students to pursue and acquire practical skills and habits in sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, table tennis, badminton, bodybuilding, aerobics, and sport climbing.
The scientific research activities of the Sport sector are oriented towards research and implementation of activities related to the issues of physical education and sport among young students, while stressing the optimization of the curricula and the increase of efficiency of using available funding.
