Over 200 foreign students underwent three-day simulation training for action during mass casualty disasters

Over 200 foreign medical students in their 3rd year completed an intensive three-day off-site training on "Simulation Training for Mass Casualty Disasters" in the period of September 15-17 2026.
The training is organized annually on the initiative of the Rector of MU–Pleven, Prof. Dr. Dobromir Dimitrov, in partnership with a team from the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation at Texas Tech University – El Paso, USA, led by Assoc. Prof. Radosveta Wells.
The teams of the Resuscitation Center of MU–Pleven, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Polina Marinova, and the "Disaster Medicine" Sector – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rositsa Vasileva and Asst. Prof. Dr. Valeri Georgiev, took part in the preparation of the students.
The practical sessions were held at the "Srebrostruy" Training Base, transformed for the purpose of the training into a realistic field training environment.
Within the framework of a simulated scenario with mass casualties, an attack, and a fire, the students performed initial assessment and triage of the victims, determined priorities for providing medical care, and organized their actions in a dynamically unfolding emergency situation.
Representatives of the Emergency Medical Care Center, the fire department, and the police actively participated in the training, which gave the future doctors the opportunity to get acquainted with the principles of interaction between different services during disasters and mass casualty incidents.
Medical interns, who stepped into the roles of trainers, also contributed to the realistic flow of the scenarios.
The three-day training is an important part of the practical preparation of medical students and develops key skills for rapid assessment of victim conditions, proper triage, teamwork, and effective communication during mass casualty disasters.
