On 20 October 2026, Prof. Dobromir Dimitrov operated on a patient in Pleven while controlling the robotic surgical instruments from Shanghai, more than 8,000 kilometres away.
A surgical and anaesthesia team remained beside the patient throughout the procedure, ready to take over if needed. The operation was completed successfully, and the patient was awake and responsive immediately afterwards.
This achievement brings together Medical University - Pleven, the Leonardo da Vinci | Center of Competence, the Clinic of Oncological Surgery at Dr. Georgi Stranski University Hospital, and international technical teams. It also marks the start of a practical research project supported by the Center to advance telesurgery.
