President Rumen Radev visited Medical University – Pleven on the eve of the new academic year

Amid an ongoing water crisis, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria met with the University’s leadership in response to the Academic Council’s declaration, urging united institutional efforts to address the shortage threatening the city’s health, education, and future.

During the meeting, President Radev expressed concern about how the University is managing the lack of water at the start of the academic year for over 3,000 international students. Rector Prof. Dobromir Dimitrov presented the solutions already in place – hydrophore systems across teaching buildings and dormitories, and a dedicated well for maintaining green spaces. Student concerns from more than 50 countries were also highlighted.

The President also showed interest in MU-Pleven’s new educational programs and the role of high-tech solutions in shaping the healthcare professionals of tomorrow. Rector Dimitrov presented the University’s latest achievement – the launch of the new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, making MU-Pleven the only medical university in Bulgaria to integrate human medicine, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy. He also showcased innovations in teaching and practice: 3D anatomy tables, augmented & virtual reality, telemedicine, and AI applications in diagnostics and therapy. A unique joint program in Telemedicine with the Higher School of Telecommunications and Posts was also discussed.

President Radev concluded his visit by touring the high-tech labs at the University’s Center of Competence in Personalized Medicine, 3D & Telemedicine, and Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery – including 3D printing, bioprinting, genomic medicine, and telepathology.

Rector Prof. Dimitrov presented President Radev with the University’s honorary plaque and the commemorative almanac “50 Years of Medical Education and Science in Pleven.”
