Brief history: The Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics, which has now been transformed into a sector, was established in 1974 with the founding of the Faculty of Medicine in Pleven. In 1975, its first head was elected – Assoc. Prof. Stefan Ribarov (currently a professor). From 1986 to 2014, the sector was headed by Prof. Petar Bochev, PhD, and since 2014 – by Prof. Margarita Alexandrova, PhD. Long-standing teachers in the Sector were: Assoc. Prof. Marin Marinov, PhD, Senior Assistant Prof. Lyudmil Benov, PhD (currently a full-time professor at Kuwait University), Senior Assistant Prof. Vanya Markova, Senior Assistant Prof. Oprieta Monovich, Senior Assistant Prof. Blagovest Bechev, Senior Assistant Prof. Dr.Moni Magriso, and the biochemist Dr. Ilia Benchev. In recent years, Prof. Kosto Mitov has joined the academic staff of the sector.
Teaching activities: The Sector participates in teaching a total of 10 compulsory subjects in all basic units of the University: "Physics," "Biophysics," "Physics and Biophysics," "Physics" for the preparatory course, "Physics with Fundamentals of Biophysics," "Biomechanics and Biophysics," "Medical Equipment in Nursing Practice," "Medical Equipment in Obstetrics and Gynecology Practice," "Medical Physics," and "Advanced Mathematics." A total of seven textbooks and laboratory manuals have been published for training purposes, including one textbook, four laboratory manuals, and two practical manuals.
Scientific activity: The scientific research activity of the Sector is in the field of biological processes of free radicals in norm and pathology, as well as in the field of probability theory. The teachers from the Sector have published over 500 scientific articles and reports, many of which in prestigious international journals with impact factor. They have been cited over 1,000 times in the scientif literature. A total of seven dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Science and one for the degree of Doctor of Science have been defended. Three monographs and one chapter in a scientific book published by Elsevier have also been published.
Achievements and awards: Members of the academic staff in this Sector have designed and manufactured unique devices for research purposes, which have been recognized as inventions or rationalizations. The team's publications rank high in journal rankings for best published articles.
