Establishment

After receiving two positive accreditations from the National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation (NAOA), the Ministry of Education and Science published a draft Decision of the Council of Ministers proposing to the National Assembly the establishment of a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine within the structure of Medical University – Pleven.

On June 11, 2025, the National Assembly voted and unanimously adopted, with 161 votes in favor, the decision to establish a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Medical University – Pleven.

National Significance and Rationale for Establishment

The establishment of the Faculty is fully aligned with the National Map of Higher Education in the Republic of Bulgaria. Its objectives and rationale are in harmony with national and regional strategic priorities in the field of higher education.

The main reason for establishing the Faculty is the identified shortage of highly qualified professionals holding a Master’s degree in “Veterinary Medicine” in the regions of Northwestern and North Central Bulgaria.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Medical University – Pleven will provide education and research activities in support of veterinary practice and science for the regions of:

Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, and Ruse.

Education and Regulatory Framework

The academic documentation – curriculum, qualification profile of the specialty “Veterinary Medicine,” as well as the syllabi for all disciplines – has been developed in accordance with:

  • The Higher Education Act;

  • The Ordinances on State Requirements for Acquiring Higher Education;

  • The Act on the Development of the Academic Staff in the Republic of Bulgaria;

  • The Regulations for the Activities of Medical University – Pleven.

The specialty “Veterinary Medicine,” leading to a Master’s degree within Field of Higher Education 6. “Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine” and Professional Field 6.4. “Veterinary Medicine,” is a regulated profession. The training is conducted in compliance with the current unified state requirements.

Faculty Structure

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is structured into three departments:

  • Department of Biomedical Sciences

  • Department of Preclinical Sciences

  • Department of Clinical Sciences, including the following divisions:

    • “Infectious Pathology”

    • “Non-infectious Pathology”

    • “Hygiene, Technology and Control of Foods of Animal Origin, Public Veterinary Practice, Legislation and Forensic Veterinary Medicine”

Facilities and Learning Environment

For the needs of the educational process, access is provided to:

  • lecture halls;

  • specialized teaching rooms for autopsy, osteology, systematic and topographic anatomy;

  • university laboratories – genetic, microbiological, virological, and histopathological.

Students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine also use the general university facilities located at the Rectorate of Medical University – Pleven, including:

  • a modern university library;

  • a publishing center;

  • indoor and outdoor sports complexes;

  • student dormitories “Medik 1” and “Medik 2”;
