Dear Colleagues,

A little time will pass, and we will meet at the XXV National Congress of the Bulgarian Anatomical Society with International Participation. This is a good opportunity for professionals in the field as a place where researchers can exchange the latest research results, disseminate information about new technologies, and pursue the challenge of new discoveries and breakthroughs. Today, the role and importance of innovative ideas and discoveries are increasing. And it is equally important to be able to use them in purposes of development of economics. But we should not forget the experience of our predecessors and their contribution to the development of science.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee and Bulgarian Anatomical Society, it is my pleasure to invite you to the XXV National Congress of the Bulgarian Anatomical Society with International Participation in Pleven, Bulgaria, from 28th to 30th May 2021.

I hope that the XXV National Congress would be professionally fruitful and personally enjoyable experience for all who attend, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Stefan Trifonov, MD, PhD Associate Professor

Head of Anatomy, Cytology, Histology and Biology Department

Faculty of Medicine

Medical University

Pleven, Bulgaria

IMPORTANT ABOUT THE FORMAT OF THE XXV CONGRESS

The XXV National Congress of the Bulgarian Anatomical Society with International Participation aims to provide a forum where researchers can exchange the latest results about new technologies and pursue the challenge of new discoveries and breakthroughs. We believe that most important above all is to ensure the safety and security of all the participating members. Therefore, we will adopt a hybrid format for this Congress.

All participants have the choice of attending on site or through Zoom system that will allow as many members as possible to give feedback on real and virtual presentations. Keep in mind that despite the expanded opportunities for vaccination, restrictions to enter Bulgaria may continue until summer (for more information on travel requirements and restriction, please visit the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Nevertheless, the Congress will be adapted to accommodate all unable to attend physically, giving remote participants the chance to actively partake in the event.

In spite of these challenging times, we sincerely hope that many domestic and foreign researchers and members will encounter each other at this Congress, and that the fruitful gathering will serve as a starting point for future research of many of our members. Please be assured that we will continue the preparations for this Meeting, keeping all participants, on-site and remote, “on the same boat” to aspire to the best future of anatomical science.

All participants will receive a confirmation e-mail with approval of their participation with oral or E-poster presentation until 15.04.2021. In the e-mail participants will be asked to give feedback on how they will attend the Congress (in presence or via Zoom) and whether they will attend the Official dinner on 29.05.2021.

ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE KINDLY ASKED TO FILL THE FOLLOWING FORM UNTIL 25.04.2021

PRESENTATION FORMAT

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Organizing Committee of this Congress value the health and safety of all participants and speakers above anything else and are preparing this Meeting accordingly.

Provided that the pandemic situation permits, we will continue to prepare to hold the XXV National Congress of the Bulgarian Anatomical Society with International Participation on-site in Pleven.

However, should in-person meetings and presentations in Pleven become difficult, we would stand by to consider other presentation options to offer true interactive experiences through online/hybrid technologies with participants from across the world.

The details will be announced as soon as they are determined.

At the time of abstract submission, you are not required to decide to present your work either in a real or virtual setting. You will be asked about your presentation options through a questionnaire after acceptance of your abstract.

WORKSHOP

Title: Conversations and practice of applied anatomy to create an art installation

Lead by: Prof Partha Vaiude, Prof Caroline Wilkinson & Mark Roughley

The delegates for this workshop will be organised to create diverse groups that have a significant inter-disciplinary mix. They will be given a variety of sculptural materials and anatomical resources (including cadaveric), training and artistic inspiration to help them create facial subunits. The exercises will harness the knowledge and skills of the delegates to work collaboratively. All levels of students and professionals will have an opportunity to explore, learn and refine their understanding of the face; contributing their individuality in a unique journey culminating in an art instillation.

The object of the workshop is to:

  • Network with a diverse group of people at different stages of their training/career.
  • Learn/refine facial anatomy (traditional, clinical and anthropological).
  • Immerse in forensic anthropological reconstructive techniques.
  • Explore artistic perspectives of the face derived from different non-medical disciplines.
  • Make a lasting contribution to the University of Pleven Anatomy-Art Installation.

It is envisaged that the workshop will work as a stimulus to initiate collaborations and lasting relationships that bridge medical sciences and art.

The workshop can hold 30 delegates.

DEMONSTRATION

Title: Simulated 3D Model of the Middle Ear for Theoretical and Practical Training for Students, Post-Graduate Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases Students and Beginning Otosurgeons

Lead: Stefan Mirchev MD, PhD, Department of   Otolaryngology, Medical University – Pleven

Postgraduate Ear, Nose and Throat diseases students and beginning otosurgeons go through a very important initial training period. The first steps in otosurgery are taken step by step. The transition from theoretical knowledge to temporal bone dissection courses is long and difficult. The lack of preliminary preparation vitiates and increases the cost of temporal bone dissection exercises.

Simulated models bridge the gap between theory and practice and contribute to a more effective training. The demonstrated model:

  • Presents the hard to find and invisible microstructures of the middle ear and the part of the facial nerve passing through it.
  • Allows work in two modes: anatomical and nosological.
  • Contributes to more lasting preservation of knowledge, using the principle of active learning and training visual and tactile memory.
