Part 1of this book – General Neurology, was first published in late 2002 with the purpose to assist foreign medical students in Bulgaria. The Neurology training in our country is typically split in two semesters: General Neurology is taught during the first and Clinical Neurology during the second one.

Basic knowledge on neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, topical diagnosis of neurological symptoms, signs and syndromes are explored in Part 1. Students should therefore have acquired practical skills in neurological examination - be able to detect abnormal symptoms and signs, formulate and localize specific syndromes of neurological disorders, by the end of the first semester. In order to facilitate foreign students even further, the General Neurology basics part is organized in accordance with the requirements of the Bulgarian educational program.

The initial edition of the book enjoyed tremendous success and our students found the content comprehensive, easy to engage with and helpful. I had for some time however wished that there was also a part that covers the educational course in Clinical Neurology. As I began to teach neurology to students, I learned that they too wished for such content. In Part 2, I decided to attempt to complement the first edition with Clinical Neurology training (Part 2).

We live in an electronic era overloaded with easily accessible information which is downloaded rather than taken off a shelf. Despite that some might question the value of traditional books today, I believe that in a world with excess information, essential content of medical practice is even more critical to grasp. This has been my main motivation in writing this book. Part1 follows the original structure and the clinical part is organized by the general rules. In writing Part 2 of this book, I drew inspiration from many essential English textbooks applying the lens of what I believe is the most valuable source of medical knowledge – my extensive practical experience.

I am delighted to present you with the second edition, which comprises a comprehensive revision of General Neurology and a new part dedicated to Clinical Neurology, intended for medical students, practicing neurologists, non-neurologist clinicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers. I feel that it will be useful in providing the essential facts about common and rare diseases as well as conditions that are likely to be encountered. I have tried to follow the rules of direct, clear, and succinct writing with emphasis on “evidence-based medicine” accompanied with ample illustrations and tables.
